What makes a house a home?  As a born and raised Edmontonian, I have called Edmonton my home all my life, and no matter what side of the city I’ve lived on, I’ve never been more than an hour’s drive from my parents.  The uncles, aunts, and cousins I grew up with have all been within a half hour’s drive.  Or a really long bike ride as I discovered the one time I rode my bike from Callingwood to Londonderry more than 20 years ago.  

I’ve never experienced living away from “home”. 

My husband, Chris, is from Newfoundland.  Although he has lived here almost his entire adult life, I’m sure a part of him calls NL home and I know, especially through the pandemic, he misses his family terribly. When we got married, I never imagined how hard it would be…

Volunteering

I’ve always been attracted to the idea of volunteering.  There is definitely something rewarding about giving up your time, especially when you can see the results.  I can still remember clearly my first volunteer experience when I was 13, at the Misericordia hospital here in Edmonton.  I believe the inspiration came from reading Sweet Valley High novels, and the stories of one of the twins being a Candy Striper at the local hospital.  Or maybe it was Nancy Drew? Anyhow I soon found out that at our local hospital you didn’t get to start out pushing a magazine cart around, chatting with appreciative patients that told you how sweet you were and slipped $5 bills into your hands, or getting to work the cash register at the hospital gift shop.  No, at…

With its storied history, convenient location and family-friendly atmosphere, Airdrie continue to attract young families and entrepreneurs in droves.

The city’s population has swelled from just under 11,500 to almost 71,000 in just 30 years. However, despite its growth, Airdrie has retained all the attributes of a connected village.
